about
6. Torah Portion June 2007 (interlude)
Age 13
I had to put this recording in the album because the experience of studying for my bat mitzvah influenced a lot of my life after. I had amazing feminist teachers who taught me radical ideas such as G-d could be a woman and G-d exists everywhere. Torah portions are read by the person coming of age and then they have to give a sermon about it in front of their community, an intimidating experience for a 13 year old. My torah portion was about a donkey whose master was beating him. G-d then spoke through the donkey and said, why are you beating me so? I was really moved by this story of the voiceless gaining a voice and thought it would be the perfect intro to Bowl of Fruit.
