about
Call my Name
Age 21
This is my favorite song because it feels so true to my core. We are as a society held up to the standards of white cis men and all ideas of success are dictated by how much we can fit into white cis male culture. This song gently but strongly says, I know my power, I’m allowed to be what you’re not, I wouldn’t have ever doubted myself if it wasn’t for you doubting me. And I’m going to throw in some badass classical guitar (Prelude No. 4 by Heitor Villa Lobos to be specific) just to show how powerful and capable I am in my own definition of what power is. I suppose this is a theme I string along in many of my songs, but it wasn’t until I was 21 that I was able to say it with such confidence.
Art: feat. Pouty Bess, the portrait my dear sister Ella Hepner painted of me, full of angst and unfuckwithable power. Behind me is sheet music to Prelude No 4 by Heitor Villa Lobos, which is featured in this song.
lyrics
You could call out my name but you know I won’t listen
You could sing louder than me but you know I’ll resist it
All the things that you said I couldn’t listen
Cuz you know better than I ever know how you try to bring me down with each fall
My voice never shakes until you doubt it
I could sing louder than you until you shouted
I knew my own power before you doubt it
Cuz I’m allowed to be what you’re not
Listen close, I will show what I am, what you’re not...
You could call out my name but you know I won’t listen
You could sing louder than me but you know I’ll resist it
All the things that you said, that you said I couldn’t listen
Cuz I know what I am, what I am
I know what I am, what I am
I like what I am, what I am
