about

6. Bowl of Fruit
Age 22
From age 20-22 I worked at a restaurant. One of my coworkers spoke a lot about the struggle to assimilate to American culture while being judged by his family for not being Chinese enough. He wanted to make a painting that represented this- a hand reaching for a bowl of fruit but all eyes closely focused on if the hand would grab the fruit or not. I loved this image and decided to write a song about it.
We also became very involved in organizing our workplace. This song is also about rising up as a united force- the kings and queens without the thrones, never to be alone. In striking contrast to the loneliness of Blue, Phone Lines and Beast in Me, this song is a joyful raging protest song of collective movement.

Art: a collage of objects from when I worked in a restaurant and was trying to organize my workplace.

lyrics

You paint a bowl of fruit forbidden in its loom
The taste is yours to try but judgement’s in the eyes
Of all the hungry ones, money packed in their gums

Tightened by the grief or serving kings and Queens
Pouring them champagne, they toast to your own pain
Make my living off wealth just keeps me on the shelf

The paint we use to paint the fruit doesn’t have a flavor so we grow our own
Let’s eat together, let the juices drip
We are the kings and queens without the thrones, never to be alone

You paint a bowl of fruit, dripping in your youth
Taste it if you’re brave but don’t if you are sane
Who do you wanna be- American or family
